Dominican Republic - An Introduction

The Dominican Republic is a country in Latin America. It occupies two thirds of Hispaniola Caribbean Island. Christopher Columbus discovered the country on December 5, 1942 during his voyage to the new world. The Hispaniola was called "Quisqueya" those days. Columbus was very fond of natural beauty of Hispaniola and described about the region in his book as "a beautiful island paradise with high forested mountains and large river valleys." Columbus and his crew together discovered coin metal gold in the region, which further led to the settlement of European people. The first such kind of settlement was discovered in La Isbela in 1493. In 1496, Bartholomew was appointed the Governor of Hispaniola. The Bartholomew was brother of Columbus. He founded the city of Santo Domingo. Spaniards came into the region around 1515.

Hispaniola was under Spanish control until 1697 when the western third of the island became a French possession. In 1804, the western part of the island became the Republic of Haiti. French people called this region “Saint Dominique”. At that time this region was one of the worlds’ richest colony mainly because of high sugarcane yields. A slave revolt broke down in Saint Dominique in 1791 and slavery system came to an end in 1794. The eastern side of island again came under Spanish rule in 1809. Spanish people declared Saint Dominique an independent state but merely after one week Haitian invaded the region. For next 22 years the island was under control of Haiti. On February 27, 1844, the eastern side of the island declared independence and the land got the new name as "Dominican Republic." According to the CIA, World Fact Book, The population of the Dominican Republic is made up of 16% Whites, 11% Blacks, and 73% of Mixed race. Approximately 95% people living in Dominican Republic are followers of Christianity. Baseball is popular sports in Dominican Republic.

The present days government in Dominican Republic is based on the government model of United States. The President of the Dominican Republic is both the Head of the State and Head of the Government. The government exercises executive power. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the two chambers of the National Congress. The Judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature. The government administration in Dominican Republic is divided into 31 provinces and these provinces are further divided into municipalities.

The Dominican Republic offers maritime, tropical climate. Rainfall mainly occurs between, May to November. The region is frequented by hurricanes between June and November. The mean annual temperature ranges from 21°C in the mountainous regions to 25°C on the plains and the coast. The average temperature in Santo Domingo in January is 23.9°C and 27.2°C in July. The economy of Dominican Republic largely depends on natural resources and government services. Agriculture plays vital role in development of the country. Large number Dominican workforce is employed into farmlands. Tourists activates also add up significantly to Dominican Republic economy.
